I am also facing the same issue with my plant. Maybe cutting deep is the only solution.

Hi! I’ve been pondering this exact question as I’m planning out my fall bulbs now… I’m hoping the additional comment will bring this one back to the surface. I’m in my first year of flower farming professionally and growing on less than 1/8 acre right now. Zone 7a/6b
Also, what is the recommended spacing for perennializing narcissus?

I haven’t grown tulips in crates myself, but lots of farmers do. Usually they are trying to “program” the bloom times, meaning crates can be stored in a cooler to be kept dormant and then pull out and put in a warm space to bloom at a very specific time (i.e., Valentine’s Day). It’s a specialty area of flower farming that I’m not well-versed in but there are many experts you could try to connect with through the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers (www.ascfg.org).

I am in zone 7b and have just started flower farming since retirement. My husband and I just finished putting up a large hoop house and someone mentioned planting them in crates versus in the ground. Would you have any insight to this?
Thanks so much,

you mentioned growing in an itty-bitty space where every inch mattered, so how did you plan for your bulbs? narcissus, for example, flower in the early spring and then die back and then.. nothing? did you just let that space remain empty for the rest of that season? did you do something akin to a bulb lasagna so you could be cutting from that space all season?
i’m fairly new to flower gardening, but from what i’ve read you want to cut back on watering as the narcissi (or other bulb) dies back so as to prevent rotting, but surely if you have additional things planted, those things would need watering.
in the research i’ve done, i see a lot of ideas for three-season color, but i haven’t yet been able to find an answer from someone who grows flower for production, so i’d very much appreciate any information or ideas! thank you 🙂

Thank you very much for your answer!
So you never cut down completely the whole stem, right? This is my first season with this plants, and they have huge flowers but not so long stems, and I don’t want to kill them but cutting too deep.

I just take the length of stem that I need for a given design and leave all the rest on the plant.

How deep do you cut the Fritillaria persica stems? My ‘Ivory Bells’ are flowering, but I can’t find any info on how much foliage should I leave on the stem, in order to regenerate to bulbs for the next season.
Thank you!
Monika
